Happy New Year's
Well today is the final day of 2010. While there were many good things, first and foremost I did not spend a single night in the hospital; there were also some bad times. Foremost of them was my Mom passing away. Thanks to all who remembered her. All in all I will be glad to see this year come to an end.

We had a very nice visit with Elizabeth’s daughter and her family. Elizabeth had a great time being Nana. We were also reminded why only the young have babies. They are just too energetic.

Tonight when the New Year starts, I hope to be sound asleep. We typically do not celebrate New Year’s. However you will celebrate the New Year’s I hope you have a great time and it is the start of a great 2011.

December 26
While I had a wonderful Christmas, one of the best gifts actually arrived the day after.  Elizabeth’s daughter, her husband and most important their daughter, Elizabeth’s granddaughter arrived for a visit.  While modern technology can sometimes complicate our lives it can also be a great benefit.  Cell phones allowed us to stay in touch with them as they traveled the nearly 500 mile.  We were able to track their progress using one of the internet map tools.  The final couple of miles we were able to provide turn by turn directions again by cell phone.  They arrived midafternoon and we had a wonderful visit.  I will have to say, Elizabeth’s granddaughter is a little bundle of energy.

Merry Christmas
Merry christmas to all.

Earlier this morning, when Christmas actually started we were still up.  We had just gotten back from a late night service at church.  It was very nice and a great way to start Christmas.  As is our tradition, we opened one gift before calling it a night.  I got a new sweat shirt form Candi.
If you cannot read the small print it says " I heart Dogs   It's people that annoy me"

Merry Christmas

Spreading Christmas Cheer
Even though Christmas i still a week away, today we started distributing gifts.  The first ones went to my daughter Bridget and her daughter Karma.  Karma wore a pretty green Christmas dress.  Too bad she did not want to keep it on.

I am sure there will be lots more gifts to open over the next week.

Building the Christmas tree
The first year Elizabeth and I were together we bought an artificial tree for Christmas.  I must admit it has seen better Christmas's (this year is year 12) and probably needs to be replaced but not this year.  It is OUR tree and it is special to me.  Each year I drag it out and build it.  It starts with a bare pole

The we add each row of limbs. They are color coded so they do not get mixed. The nice thing about doing it this way is you can add the lights as you go.

The base section is nearly complete.

Add the top and a few beaded garland.

Then add the Christmas ornaments and you get a completed tree.

Put some gifts under it and it is ready for Christmas.

Christmas songs
I have often wondered if people who grew up in the south really understand Christmas songs? Can they really visualize a horse pulling a sleigh? I know we, on rare occasion, get snow and in fact several years ago woke to a white Christmas but those are few and far between. Yesterday I heard a song the supports my belief. In fact it was a Christmas song that must have been written by a Southerner. The song was Let it Snow. As I listened I started to think would a person who grew up having to drive in that stuff or shovel it or pay to heat a house covered by it really say let it snow let it snow? I do not think so. Sure if you know the temperature in the afternoon will climb into the 60’s and melt that fraction of an inch of accumulation, you may sing let it snow. However, if you live where snow fall is measured in feet not inches you would NEVER EVER joyfully sing let it snow.

Just a thought.
